sometimes what you don’t know matters more than what you do know, for better or for worse. but at the end of the day, you’ve got to realize that you can’t know everything. your wife might be fucking the mailman for all you know, all you can do is keep your cool. cause your only other option is to wait for the mailman to deliver your mail and then kill him, and then your neighbors will think your a dick because you’ve murdered him in the middle of his route and they won’t get their mail. that, and you’ll go to jail, too.

in the course of any relationship, it’s impossible to know and understand everything that happens between you and the people you care about. there’s no such thing as full disclosure, there’s never full transparency. honesty edits for the sake of continuity and progress. people withhold information to spare feelings. but if you pay attention, you can usually piece it together and understand the story that’s not being told. especially in hindsight, especially after you’ve left a time and place. it’s easy to look at an old photograph and see someone’s expression and understand years later what they were thinking, even though you were clueless at the time. it’s easy to remember a place and understand what was good about it, even if you hated it when you were there, etc.

some things don’t require deciphering, though. like, if you’re a caucasian dude and your wife is a caucasian lady and she gets pregnant and 9 months later she has an asian baby, you can be pretty certain that she fucked an asian guy, even if she doesn’t tell you.

there are so many memories that i try to keep vivid that insist on fading into a sepia blur… like the feeling of excitement and wonder i would get as a kid when central park would cover up with snow for the first time each winter. it’s one of my favorite memories and yet, every year, i become less certain of the details. the smells, the way the air bit at my cheeks, the sound of other kids playing – when i try to bring it back, it all has a slight blur to it and even the photos have an unfamiliar hue to them, now. but then there are things that i want to forget about that stay way too crisp for too long. like the time that i found out that a girl i was seeing was sucking some really cheesy douchebag’s dick.
